Wally Lake Fest 2013: New Events!

The highly anticipated fourth Annual Wally Lake Fest is a little over a month away and the excitement is mounting for this three day festival celebrating summer fun on Lake Wallenpaupack and around its shoreline with a multitude of activities from free sailboat rides and a boat parade to an open market fair and  a tour de towpath bike ride.

Wally Lake Fest takes place August 23rd through the 25th and a variety of new or extended events have been added to the itinerary this year.

Lace up your boots for the Motorcycle “Ride for the Lake”. This was introduced last year and an expanded route is planned for a 41 mile ride around the beautiful lake.  The ride runs on Saturday, from 10 a.m. to noon and begins at the Wallenpaupack Area High School. This benefits the non-profit Lake Wallenpaupack Watershed Management District, which is an organization that studies the lake and protects it from pollution. The motorcycle ride is a great way to spend time with people who share an appreciation for motorcycles while supporting a great cause.  For a map and registration information, call (570) 226-3865 or visit www.wallenpaupackwatershed.org.

On Saturday and Sunday, the popular Boat, Watercraft and Outdoor Show happens from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Wallenpaupack High School, giving people another chance to browse through beautiful boats, watercrafts and ATV’s.  Many local marinas and boat rental businesses will showcase their unique products. Vendors and food stands will also be available.

This year’s Wally Lake Fest is shaping up to be the best yet, with even more additions in a range of interests including a Vintage Bicycle Show, a Pet Adoption Day, a Family Activity Spot, tube rentals and more.

Calling all vintage bike enthusiasts! The Vintage Bicycle Show takes place on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Sawmill Cycles across from IGA.  Admire bikes from the past with names like Schwinn, Hawthorne and JC Higgens. People are also encouraged to bring their own vintage bikes to share.

Give a furry, lovable friend a home during the Pet Adoption Day at Penny Lane Candies and Candles on Saturday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Dessin Animal Shelter will bring their cutest animals that are up for adoption to Penny Lane. People who give a $2 donation will receive and free Hawaiian shaved ice and anyone who adopts an animal will receive a $5 gift certificate from Penny Lane.

The kids will love the Family Activity Spot at Gresham’s Landing. This fun event takes place on Saturday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Both days, there will be a Pirate Ship Bounce House, face painting, kids tattoos and balloons.  On Saturday, festival goers can enjoy a Fox MotorSports team race car, meet children’s authors from the Hawley and Pike County libraries and also get information about Northeast Innovation Alliance/Workforce Wayne and First Book-Wayne/Pike. On Sunday, Judy’s Hairway to Heaven will offer specials like entering to win a gift basket, replenishing with light refreshments and receiving 10 percent cuts, manicures and pedicures.

A returning crowd pleaser is the Battle of the Bands. This event debuted last year and was a big hit. On Saturday from 11:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m., several bands perform right on the water on top of a floating stage near the Dike and Visitors Center. The bands scheduled are Gone Crazy, George Wesley Band and Tommy Guns Band.  People are invited to drop anchor and listen on the lake from their boats, lay out on the Dike while soaking up the sun and tunes, or rent a tube from Northeast Wilderness Experience and watch from the beach.  Tube rentals are available from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. For a half day rental, the tubes are $15 and for the full day, $25.

To make it possible for people to get the most out of their Wally Lake Fest experience, a free shuttle bus will run every five to ten minutes on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. (with a Hawley Silk Mill stop available from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.) and on Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Wally Lake Fest is proudly hosted by the Downtown Hawley Partnership and presented by Lighthouse Harbor Marina.
