Wally Lake Fest 2014: Returning Events

Wally Lake Fest: August 22-24, 2014

Preparations for this year’s Wally Lake Fest are in full swing. The highly anticipated three-day festival from August 22-24 celebrates ultimate fun on beautiful Lake Wallenpaupack as well as in and around the Lake Region with activities and events for people of all ages from boat parades to craft shows and ice cream socials to kayak demonstrations.

This year marks Wally Lake Fest’s fifth year and it’s now widely known as the biggest festival celebrating the Big Lake and the tail end of the summer season.  Residents and visitors flock to the shoreline and glistening waters to participate in the many scheduled water activities and also have a blast on dry land. There are many returning events people look forward to including the open market fair, the boat, watercraft and outdoor show, live music ON the lake, tours of the Dam, free sailboat rides, the boat parade, the tour de towpath bike ride and many others.

On Friday, Wally Lake Fest officially kicks off in a celebratory way as the local restaurants, pubs and other establishments feature a variety of live entertainment including The Settlers Inn, The Boat House Restaurant, Roots Yoga Studio, Ehrhardt’s Pub, John’s Italian Restaurant, and The Ritz Theater. Live music is also scheduled for the rest of the weekend.

On Saturday and Sunday, The Open Market Fair takes place from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Lake Wallenpaupack Visitors Center as local artisans and crafters showcase their wares and handmade products from maple syrup to soaps.

Also on Saturday and Sunday, The PPL Dam and Power House Tours at the PPL Environmental Learning Center run continuously throughout the day from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. These guided tours allow people an in-depth look into how this hydroelectric plant operates.  The Dam tours are only offered during Wally Lake Fest, so anyone interested in learning about the lake’s important role in generating electricity is encouraged to check it out.

Both days, the Boat, Watercraft and Outdoor Show at the Wallenpaupack Area High School allow boat enthusiasts the opportunity to view beautiful boats, watercraft and ATVs.  People can enjoy vendors and food stands in between browsing (by flores).  In addition, many local marinas display some of their products. The show is from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

One of the most popular Wally Lake Fest events is the free sailboat rides, which are offered on Saturday. People who always wanted to sail but may not know how to themselves can experience this thrilling sport at Lighthouse Harbor Marina from 1 to 4 p.m.  The lake is appreciated in all its glory as the wind whips the sails and the boats glide through the glistening water.  The sailboats depart approximately every hour for a one hour sail. Reservations are required and boats fill up quickly. Call the Lake Wallenpaupack Visitors Center at (570) 226-2141.

The boat parade is another boating event people love whether they enter and decorate their own boat or watch from the shoreline.  Boat registration is free and entrants win fantastic prizes for the best “dressed” boats with the first place winner receiving $1,000. Have fun and get creative! The parade begins around 2 p.m. on Saturday and spectators can see the boats go past the Dike at approximately 4 p.m. The boat parade is organized and presented by Davis R. Chant Realtors – 570-226-4518.

A returning crowd pleaser is the Battle of the Bands. This event debuted last year and was a big hit. On Saturday from 11:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m., several bands perform right on the water on top of a floating stage near the Dike and Visitors Center. The bands scheduled are Blue London, Tribes and Merchants of Groove. People are invited to drop anchor and listen on the lake from their boats, lay out on the Dike while soaking up the sun and tunes, or rent a tube from Northeast Wilderness Experience and watch from the beach.  Tube rentals are available from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.

On Sunday, the Tour de Towpath Bike Ride takes off from Sawmill Cycles for a beautiful 16-32 mile road ride to the Zane Grey Museum along the Lackawaxen River. Shuttle service is provided from Zane Grey or cyclists can bike back.  Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. at Sawmill Cycles, which is on Route 6, across from the IGA supermarket. People can pre-register or sign up the day of the event.  Bike rentals are available for $35. The shuttle service is $10.

These favorite events and more are making a comeback for another weekend of Wally Lake Fest fun. Be sure not to miss out on these exciting activities!

Wally Lake Fest is proudly hosted by the Downtown Hawley Partnership and presented by Lighthouse Harbor Marina.

Area businesses had one of the busiest days of the summer; parking lots were full, the first Open Market Fair at the Visitors Center was packed with happy shoppers, the boat show was well attended and there were plenty of happy faces at the ice cream social in Hawley.

This year’s festival will feature events located throughout the Lake Region including the Lake Wallenpaupack Visitors Center, Downtown Hawley, area businesses and on the lake.  The committee’s goal is to create another weekend full of events that embrace the pristine natural beauty and fun atmosphere of the lake as well as provide opportunities for local business to showcase their products and services, stimulate tourism and strengthen the community.

Friday night will kick-off with a music tour at the area restaurants. On Saturday and Sunday, there will be a celebration of talent at the Open Market Fair at the Lake Wallenpaupack Visitors Center.  The Market will feature independent art, music, food and design. The Boat Show will once again be taking place in the Wallenpaupack Area High School parking lot on Saturday and a breathtaking bike ride will leave from the Visitors Center on Sunday morning taking eager bikers down to the Lackawaxen River.

Lake Fest will also host a variety of outdoor experiences taking place along the shore and across the Lake Wallenpaupack Nature Trail. Visitors will learn about kayaking, canoeing, boating safety, sailing, the PPL Dam and more.

The grand Boat Parade, a Wallenpaupack favorite of years past, will be enhanced from last year to seek greater participation.  Individuals are encouraged to decorate their boats and enter into the judged parade on Saturday.

On Saturday night, people can visit the quaint Downtown Hawley to shop and dine at some of the best restaurants in the region.
